In the year 2000, cancer took over as the second highest cause of deaths ( after heart disease ) in Malaysia. In 2003, cancer became the top cause of death in UK. Last year it became the top cause of deaths in USA. 100 years ago cancer was relatively rare, but in the last few decades, the wrath of cancer seems to be unstoppable, and it will become the top killer in most developed countries. I predict that it will be so for our country well before 2020, the year we aspire to officially join the class of “developed” nations.

Presently, 1 in 4 of us is expected to get cancer. In USA it is 1 in 3, and in some polluted cities, 1 in 2. These figures will get worse in the future.

Lung cancer remains the top killer, and will remain so as long as our people continue to ignore the warnings on smoking. Ninety per cent of lung cancers are related to smoking, and it is easy to see how this scourge can be easily controlled by just not smoking. Unfortunately, the trend here ( and in other developing countries ) is that more and more are taking up the habit, including women and youngster. It is good that the government embarked on the “Tak nak!” anti-smoking campaign, but the result has yet to be seen.

Smoking is also a major risk factor for heart disease, so there is really much to be gained by discouraging it. The effectiveness of public education can be seen in the developed countries, where smoking is in fact on the decline, much helped by the multi-billion dollar suits that aggrieved smokers have won against the cigarette companies.

Breast cancer is increasing relentlessly, with the risk now 1 in 19 for Malaysians ( 1 in 14 for ethnic Chinese ). That was the same statistics for USA 30 years ago. Their risk has now jumped to 1 in 7. The same trend is expected here.

Colorectal and prostate cancers, leukemias, and lymphomas are all killing more and more people. Every organ in the body can become cancerous, and with the increase in life-expectancy ( mainly due to better treatment of other diseases ), more cancers are expected to be seen. Prostate cancer, for example, is something men who live long will find very difficult to avoid.

All this is in spite of billions of dollars being spent on cancer research. And much more money is being spent on treating the cancer patients, although the final outcome is far from satisfactory.

Even though I am not an oncologist, I do see many cancer patients who seek advice on the holistic approach to managing their cancers, and to learn anti-cancer Qigong.

Being diagnosed with cancer is devastating for these patients and their families. This is more so because the prospects of cure is not so bright. Yes, certain cancers are curable, especially if treated in the early stages. But many cancers are discovered only in the late stages, and the results of treatment, even in the best medical centres in the world, are disappointing. For many, getting cancer means a slow agonizing death. The physical pain and mental stress are grave. Then there is the monumental financial strain to cope with. The entire family’s routine is upset coping with the debility, the need to go for regular treatments, the stress and the costs.
QIGONGTREATS AND PREVENTS CANCER

It would seem that the only effective strategy against cancer is prevention. Unfortunately, while the modifiable risk factors of cardiovascular diseases, when reduced, are very effective in preventing heart disease and stroke, the same is not so true with the risk factors for cancer ( except smoking; excess unprotected sun-exposure; known carcinogenic infections like H.pylori, Hepatitis viruses and human papilloma virus; and occupational exposure to certain known carcinogens ). Leading a healthy lifestyle and eating a healthy diet will certainly help, but other factors ( genetic, and perhaps most importantly the toxic polluted environment we are now living in ) seem to be too strong.

During the last 15 years that I have been associated with Qigong, I met many cancer survivors who attributed their recovery mainly to their practice of Qigong. There were many who were terminal and were told that nothing more could be done for them, yet they still recovered. I have related several of these real-life stories in earlier articles. If Qigong is able to reverse even advanced cancer, it can certainly prevent it.

Qigong is therefore something that every one should learn, as a way to prevent cancer, and also many other diseases. If you are already suffering from a health problem, your need to learn and practice qigong is more urgent, and you also need to devote more time to its practice. Qigong is easy to learn, and a joy to practise.

Recently, a colleague of mine lost his dear wife after she had suffered for many months. The best of medical treatments were at her disposal, but it was of little use. When I visited her she was already bed-ridden, was not able to eat or drink due to intestinal obstruction, and was in no condition to practise even the simplest Qigong exercises. I only wished that she had learned about Qigong earlier. For Qigong to be helpful, the patient must be able to practise it a lot.

Almost everyday I get calls from cancer patients or their relatives, seeking advice. Apart from giving them a nutritional prescription, I advise every one of them to learn and practise Qigong. However, what I feel most fail to realize, is that the amount of nutritional supplements and the amount of Qigong practice necessary to reverse cancer is much more than for those who just need to maintain health.

Cancer means the body’s defense has failed. Before the body succumbs, it would have been working overtime for some time trying its best to stop the cancer cells from proliferating. The process is a long battle between the two. If you get cancer, it means your body lost.

THE HOLISTIC BATTLE AGAINST CANCER

My strategy to combat cancer is to restore the body to its original healthy state. Only then can the body be expected to heal itself. To restore the body to a healthy state requires a lot of effort. Of course, the risk factors have to be avoided if possible.

The holistic battle against cancer starts with a spiritual appraisal of the situation. For those who believe in God, there must be acceptance and reconciliation with the spiritual meaning behind the illness and suffering. Everything in life has a spiritual basis. It is not that God, The Most Loving, has got nothing better to do than make us suffer. He has very good reasons for making things happen, and ultimately we ourselves are responsible for whatever befalls us.
The mental and emotional aspects can then be more easily handled once the spiritual implications are grasped. Although recent studies failed to show that a positive mental attitude affected the outcomes of cancer treatments, it is obvious that a patient who is determined to live will search endlessly for a cure, whereas one who is negative minded will give up much earlier. And even if the outcomes do not change, the quality of life may differ in that the positive-minded are more at peace with the pain and suffering. This aspect was not looked into.

Cancer and aging result from cumulative damage to the genes. Cancer cells have genes that are grossly abnormal. So it is important to take supplements that help the cells to protect, repair, and synthesize the genes. Nucleic acids are not only valuable in regenerative ( anti-aging ) medicine, but also in cancer prevention.

Hormones play an important role in modulating certain cancers. The sex hormones heavily influence the onset and progress of certain cancers. For example, breast cancer treatment is tailored according to the presence or absence of estrogen receptors. So hormones must also be attended to in the treatment and prevention of cancers.

Various nutritional therapies have been tried, some achieving good results. A Korean oncologist observed the same results in his patients undergoing chemotherapy as those given a concoction of powdered raw foods ( a combination of 30 different common foods ) daily. So he stopped giving them chemotherapy. Others have recovered after taking high doses of fruits and vegetables extracts. Even colloidal minerals have saved many lives from cancer. Tocotrienols ( from palm oil ) and oleic acid ( from olive oil ) are likely to do so too.

There are so many testimonies of cancer patients who improved after taking lingzhi, maitake, agaricus, chaga, noni, sky fruit and other functional foods. In Japan, mushroom extracts ( especially Agaricus blazei murill ) are given intravenously with impressive results. However, since these are not drugs, there are not many validated large-scale studies.

Then there are the high-tech nutritional supplements like deuterium sulphate, transfer factor, glutathione boosters, MGN3 and other immune boosters. However, to fight cancer, high doses must be consumed, much more than that recommended for health maintenance.

Further help can be given to the body by consuming purified, oxygenated, alkaline , energized water; by detoxifying all foods consumed ( possible by using a water ozonizer ); and by ensuring that the bowel is healthy and functioning efficiently at all times. Managing stress well would reduce heart disease, stroke, as well as cancer.

Recharging the body’s healing energy, or Qi, completes the holistic armaments against cancer. This may indeed be the most important factor as all those cancer patients, who did not recover until they practised Qigong, will testify.

Qigong, the right nutritional prescription, and a holistic strategy can be a powerful combination against cancer. If you start when you are healthy, you can expect to remain so. Even if you start after having got cancer, you will have a fighting chance to win the battle.
